The Hofner Violin Bass was designed by Walter Hofner in 1955 and first shown to the public at the Frankfurt Music Fair in 1956.

Lightweight and with a short 30 inch scale it appealed to double bass players who were tired of lugging such a big heavy instrument around. It was given the model number 500/1, in line with the Hofner numbering system. It wouldn't be known as the Violin Bass until 1963.

Made famous by Paul McCartney, the bass was first imported into Great Britain in 1963 where the distributor decided to name it "Violin Bass" rather than use the model number. It soon became known as "The Beatles Bass" for obvious reasons.

It has remained in constant production since 1956 with numerous variations to the basic design having been made. Early 1960s examples are much sought after by collectors.

This Diamond Jubilee Limited Edition bass is part of the long heritage of the Violin Bass, played by many and enjoyed by millions. We are confident you will enjoy owning yours.
